Meteorology, and Weather Forecast for Mount Pocono, PA

Meteorology, and Weather Forecast for Mount Pocono, PA from Joseph

The weather is not something to be enjoyed, appreciated, and beheld - it is something to be observed, measured, analyzed, forecast...and defeated if that were possible

Anyway, welcome to my weather page. I enjoy weather quite a bit actually - my favorite type being a sunny & warm Autumn day with a moderate or cool night. I am staying away from the term Indian Summer and its dubious definitions involving killing frosts, etc., though that is basically what I mean - and suspect that we in 2007 don't experience anything close to the extent it was when you could walk from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi under the shade of a tree (which keeps it cooler during summer and makes sunny days at least a little warmer after the leaves fall off to a significant extent).

One thing I did beat was the highest score in an online Yatzy game. Though I am not sure that is anything to be proud of, I decided to mention that so people reading these pages have some idea what I am all about. I am sure someone will eventually get a 355 or better - I had about a 1 in 70 chance with 2 spaces to go in a game recently, which is about as good as it gets. The first 354 game had about a 1 in 300-400 chance with 3 spaces left (and I was extremely lucky). I don't really play a whole lot, but played Yahtzee since I was a kid and understand probability very well. Everyone wants to win the lottery, but no one wants a tornado to level their house (but the odds are about the same ). FWIW, here are some things I do for great games. I also got the high score for Game 2 recently - maybe will give some tips regarding that later. Here is why I don't plan on trying to beat the record for Game 1 anytime soon. If Yahtzee and the calculations involved interest you, check Tom Verhoeff's Optimal Solitaire Yahtzee Player and Proficiency Test.

If you can't beat the weather, at least you can forecast it. Below is a forecast for Mount Pocono, PA. I try to update these at least daily or if they become significantly inaccurate, yet seldom have the time to give what would be my best estimate at any particular time - which many days would make little difference. ISP and other problems may occasionally prevent that.

You can also measure it. I take daily weather statistics:

Below is a series of articles I intended as an ordered sequence of study for weather forecasting, though I don't foresee being able to make any progress on them in the near futuredue to time constraints:

I am also a weather consultant. If you like the weather information at my site, but desire personalized and more specific information, working for you would probably be fine:

National Weather Service Information

The National Weather Service offices at Mount Holly, NJ and Binghamton, NY provide official weather forecasts, observations, climate, and related information for the Pocono mountains region. Forecasts and warnings can be obtained there or at this page for PA. The latter site may at some time be discontinued, though because of the primarily text format I can access information most quickly from it.

Note that it is not my purpose to provide weather warnings, but a forecast which people may find helpful and specific for the Monroe Co. area. The NWS warnings should always be noted and heeded.

Some Other Sites

A fine site I came across recently for mid-Atlantic weather is one with that name from Jimmy Chaplin. This includes a variety of weather information and personalized weather forecasts and discussions for the DC/MD/VA region.

The front page of Unisys Weather is good for a quick look at the current weather situation, and you can enter your zip code or city name for a local NWS forecast and nearby conditions. Though more detailed charts are listed below, this shows a large scale surface chart with cloudiness and precipitation, which can be animated. The PSC Weather Center has something similar; and if you like doing your own analyses, offers the ability of making your own charts. Digital Atmosphere is an excellent weather analysis and display program for the PC for that purpose also.

Climate information is available at several sites, 2 of which I find particularly useful are the Pennsylvania State Climatologist site & Herb's Mid-Atlantic Weather Station. The former includes many descriptions of PA climate, abundant data for specific locations, and links for forecasts; and the latter a great variety of weather information emphasizing climate in the mid-Atlantic region (based in Columbia, MD).

The links to specific charts and sources of data was becoming outdated, so I removed it - difficult enough keeping the links above current. The start page on my browser is a forecast menu which provides links I most often use (though some eventually become obsolete), a few of which require a small subscription to WeatherTap. This article describes the menu and how I use it.
