January 24, 2006 snow event

A band of snow with a weak cold front passed our region early night, which included some below cloud lightning & thunder. Periods of large flakes to nickel-quarter size occurred, and a brief period of very heavy snow with normal-sized flakes from about 2143-2150 EST with thunder & lightning. Temperatures decreased from around 34° to slightly below 32° during the event:

That limited accumulation, which was measured as 1.1-1.2 inches on top of the existing snow cover of less than an inch with a thin layer of ice on top (best estimate of average was 1.16). Accumulation on the wooden deck was quite consistent, and averaged slightly more than 1.2 inches. Most likely accumulation was a bit less on top of the snow cover because of a film of water on top of the ice.

show snow beginning at 2107 EST, yet I definitely saw it earlier - just a bit after 2100 with some flakes already on the deck - and this is 3 miles ESE of MPO (band moved from W to E). Note that MPO does not have a melting gauge, so any snow is reported as a trace until it sometime later melts.
